About Us
Mission Statement
The mission of Virgil I. Bailey Elementary school, in partnership with parents and community, is to establish an educational environment, which promotes the development of life-long learners. We challenge each child with an educational program that meets the needs of each individual through curiosity, cooperation, respect, creative and critical thinking. We empower each student with the life skills necessary to become a contributing member of an increasingly complex society.
History
A fourth elementary school building was planned for construction in the northeast section of the city in order to relieve overcrowding conditions at Carl J. Polk Elementary. Construction was completed in 1967 for Virgil I. Bailey Elementary School, named in honor of the first Superintendent of Schools for the city.
A new Early Learning Wing was added to Bailey School in 2011. It includes 10 new classrooms and a storage facility. It originally housed the district's kindergarten classrooms, an additional computer lab and services for students with special needs. Currently it houses primary grades for Bailey students.
